Adding vs removing tax
Add tax when you have a price before tax and want the total:
Tax = Amount × rate% · Total = Amount + Tax
Remove tax when a total already includes tax and you want the net:
Net = Total ÷ (1 + rate%) · Tax = Total − Net
Malaysia SST quick reference
Malaysia uses SST (Sales and Service Tax), not GST (GST was abolished in 2018):
- Service Tax — 8% (raised from 6% in March 2024) on taxable services, including many F&B and service businesses.
- Sales Tax — 5% or 10% depending on the goods.
- Registration is generally required once annual taxable turnover passes the prescribed threshold. Always confirm your obligations with a licensed tax agent or the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
